Patients interested in BBL surgery often complain of having flat or small buttocks. They also may complain of a general lack of definition in their hips and buttocks. BBL surgery is a great way to create a compelling, well-rounded figure.

What Makes a Brazilian Butt Lift Unique.

Older surgical procedures to increase buttock volume relied on hard silicone implants inserted directly into the gluteus maximus muscle.

The recovery could be quite painful, and the implants could develop problems like migration (moving out of position) or capsular contracture (excessive build-up of scar tissue). Luckily, BBL surgery has all but replaced implant-based buttock augmentation surgery.

Brazilian butt lift surgery uses a patient’s excess fat to build volume and shape the buttocks. Fat is collected using liposuction. This surgical technique uses short, hidden scars to remove fat between the skin and underlying muscle. For BBL surgery, there is a minimum amount of available fat that must be present to ensure a successful aesthetic result. In rare cases, a patient may be asked to gain a small amount of weight before surgery.

The Procedure

During your consultation, patients will have their anatomy assessed to determine the best donor sites for this procedure.

BBL surgery usually removes fat from the back, hips, and thighs, although the abdomen is sometimes used. Fat donor sites must have good skin tone and elasticity to ensure the best possible liposuction results.

The fat that has been removed is then processed to ensure that only healthy, viable fat cells remain. It is then injected safely between the skin and gluteus maximus muscle in the buttocks.

Again, only small hidden incisions are used for fat injections, so there is relatively little scarring after a BBL procedure.

Not all of the fat that has been injected survives. This means that approximately 70% of the injected fat remains permanently, and the other 30% is safely resorbed by the body. The amount of fat that survives after three months is permanent and will stay with you for as long as you maintain your body weight.

There is a limit to the amount of fat that can safely be injected into each buttock during a Brazilian butt lift. Failure to respect these limits is unsafe and can lead to complications.

Improper fat injection into the underlying muscle can cause severe complications and must be avoided at all costs. Therefore, patients who undergo Brazilian butt lift surgery must only do so with an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon.

A Brazilian butt lift procedure lasts 3 to 4 hours and is done under general anesthetic.

Patients can go directly home after their procedure. Post-operative activity restrictions include asking patients to avoid sitting directly on their buttocks for the first two weeks after surgery. Most patients take two to three weeks off work following their surgery.

There are no further activity restrictions after 4 to 6 weeks, although it can take up to 3 months to see the final cosmetic result.
