What is Sculptra?

Sculptra treatment involves the injection of small beads of poly-L lactic acid.

This is the same material that is used in some of the dissolving sutures routinely used in surgery. After Sculptra has been injected, the beads start to slowing dissolve over time. The dissolving process is what stimulates new collagen formation. This can reverse signs of aging such as bone resorption, volume loss and increased skin laxity.

At New Age Medical Aesthetics and Plastic Surgery, we do not use any permanent dermal fillers. Sculptra is considered "semi-permanent" because it stimulates your body to produce more collagen.

Sculptra Vs Other Derma Fillers

There are several differences between Sculptra and other dermal fillers.
The results following Sculptra injection are not immediate, compared to something like a lip filler injection. Patients are also likely to require more than one treatment session. On average, patients require three Sculptra injection treatment sessions to achieve their desired results. These treatments are usually spaced apart by 3-4 week intervals. The good news is that treatment results are very long-lasting. Some patients report improvements in skin texture and wrinkle reduction that are still present over two years after Sculptra injections.

Am I a Good Candidate for Sculptra?

Not everyone is a candidate for Sculptra injections.  
Patients who are allergic to Scuptra medication components, have a history of keloid formation of hypertrophic scarring, or those who are pregnant or lactating should not undergo Sculptra treatments. There are also certain areas of the face which cannot be treated with Sculptra.

It is important to be aware that Sculptra injections are medical treatments that should only be performed by an expert nurse injector or board-certified plastic surgeon.
Although this procedure carries very low risks when performed by an experienced practitioner, severe and sometimes permanent complications can occur when injectables are performed by an inexperienced or untrained injector. This procedure should only be done at an accredited medical facility by experienced injectors overseen directly by a board-certified plastic surgeon.

Preparing for your Sculptra appointment

During your Sculptra injection appointment, your surgeon or nurse injector will go over your treatment goals and determine if you are a good candidate for treatment.

The injections themselves are quick and almost painless, with most patients comparing the injection feeling to a slight pinch.

To prepare for your injectable appointment our staff will discuss certain medications that need to be avoided. These include certain herbal supplements, blood thinners or any other medications that can lead to bruising.

After treatment, patients can resume their normal activities immediately. They are asked to massage the injected area for five minutes, five times per day for five days after injection. Icing is also recommended to reduce swelling and bruising.
