How Does Botox Work?
Four layers of facial muscles exist underneath the skin. When they move and contract, they demonstrate emotion and help us communicate.
Over time, repeated muscle contraction in specific areas of the face can create creases and wrinkles. Left untreated, these can form lasting lines that make people feel older than they are. Luckily, Botox can help to reverse and prevent these changes.
Botox cosmetic treatments act on the nerves in the face that are responsible for muscle contraction.
Botox and Dysport are naturally occurring, purified proteins that selectively prevents the nerves from allowing these muscles to contract. Preventing muscle contraction minimizes wrinkles and facial lines while preventing new ones from occurring.

What Areas Can Be Treated with Botox?
Common areas treated with Botox include frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead creases, fine lines around the lips, bunny lines, marionette lines, neck, and chin dimpling.
Botox is also effective at providing a non-surgical brow lift (also called a Botox Brow Lift). The eyebrows have muscles that both elevate and lower them. By selectively targeting the muscles that lower the brow, the brow elevator muscles are more powerful and will provide a
natural, lifted result.
It is important to note that while they can powerfully reduce the signs of aging, neuromodulators like Botox cannot restore facial volume that may be lost over time. Because of this, Botox treatments are often combined with lip fillers, cheek fillers, and under eye filler. The addition of Botox can also be used to lengthen the duration of filler treatments.
Botox is not just for women. More and more male patients are choosing to undergo Botox treatments. The reason for this is simple: everyone wants to look their best, and nobody wants to look older than they feel.

Patient Review
In this video, our 40 year old patient shares her Botox treatment experience with Courtney, our Expert Nurse Injector at New Age in Ottawa.
How Long Does Botox Last?
Botox is a temporary medication, meaning the effects typically last for 3 to 4 months. Longevity of treatment varies from person to person. After injection, patients will usually see the full result in 10 to 14 days. Touch-ups may be required after the initial injection to avoid over-treatment.
Preparing for your Botox Treatment
To prepare for your Botox appointment, our staff will discuss certain medications that need to be avoided.
These include certain herbal supplements, blood thinners, or other medications that can lead to bruising. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you cannot be treated with neuromodulator medications.
Neuromodulator treatment appointments usually last 10 – 15 minutes. Your injector will discuss aesthetic goals and work with you to develop a custom treatment plan. Makeup will be removed before treatment. A topical anesthetic may be used, although the injections
themselves are relatively painless on their own.
After treatment, avoid massaging the injected areas, and avoid laying down for 4 hours. Laying down can cause the neuromodulator medication to migrate into unintended areas of the face. Avoiding strenuous exercise 48 hours after injection can also help with the longevity of the treatment.

Facial Slimming with Botox
Masseter injections with neuromodulators work differently from other Botox and Dysport procedures. It can take longer to see the results after injection (up to 1-3months), but the results can last up to 6 months in some patients. This is because, in masseter reduction, the neuromodulators shrink muscle mass instead of selective paralysis.
Masseter Botox
The masseters are one of four paired muscles that help us to chew our food. They are located outside the mandible (jawbone) and work to open and close the mouth. Some patients have large, prominent masseter muscles. This unfortunately can lead to a square-shaped jaw, altering the overall shape of the face. Large masseter muscles can also contribute to a bulky, masculine-appearing jawline.
In patients who feel they have prominent masseter muscles, neuromodulator treatments like Botox and Dysport are extremely effective at decreasing muscle size while still avoiding functional issues while chewing.
Botox and Dysport work to temporarily weaken targeted muscle groups. When used in the masseter muscles, they can decrease overall muscle bulk and size. This produces a slimmer jawline, which makes the face look more like a heart and less like a square. Please visit our neuromodulator page to learn more about how these medications work.
What's the difference between Botox and fillers?
Botox relaxes the muscles to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, while fillers literally 'fill in' the wrinkle or hollow area to smooth the skin.
Can I exercise after Botox?
It is generally recommended to avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours after Botox to prevent spreading the toxin to unintended muscles. We also recommend that you do not lay down for at least 4 hours after your botox treatment.
Does Botox help with acne?
Some studies suggest Botox may reduce sebum production and decrease pore size, helping reduce acne.
Can Botox treat under-eye bags?
Botox can't remove under-eye bags, but it can soften wrinkles around the eyes. Under-eye bags are often better treated with fillers, surgery, or skincare products.
How Long Does It Take Botox To Work?
Some people begin to see the effects of Botox within a few days of their injection, but the full effect may not be visible until about two weeks.
What areas can be treated with Botox?
Botox is commonly used to treat lines and wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes (crow's feet). It's also used for a variety of medical conditions, such as migraines and excessive sweating.
What is The Difference Between a Lip Flip with Botox and Lip Filler?
Expert Nurse Injector Courtney explains the difference between a botox lip flip and lip filler.
How quickly can I return to normal activities after Botox?
Can I drink alcohol after Botox?
It is generally advised to avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before and after treatment to reduce the risk of bruising.

What is Trap Botox?
The trapezius muscles are large muscles that connect the neck to the shoulder and spine. Overactivity of these muscles can cause neck and shoulder tension, headaches, poor posture, and reduced range of motion. Some patients don’t like the look of bulky neck muscles and prefer a slimmer, more refined appearance. Trapezius muscle botox, or “Trap Tox,” can help relax your neck and shoulders while providing a slimmed, beautiful appearance.
Top Benefits of Trap Botox
Botox injection into the trapezius muscles does not cause any functional deficits. Instead, “Trap Tox” has a host of benefits:
- Quick relief from tightness in the neck and shoulders by relaxing the muscles responsible.
- Improved range of motion of the neck and shoulders once the tense, overactive trapezius muscles have been relaxed.
- Relief from tension headaches caused by tight trapezius muscles.
- Improved posture by reducing the tendency to hunch the shoulders forward from tight muscles.
- Cosmetic changes resulting in a less-bulky, elongated neck.
- Trapezius botox injections are long-lasting, typically from 3-5 months post-treatment.
- Regular maintenance injections are required to improve and maintain results.
Recovery
After treatment, avoid massaging the areas that are injected, and try to avoid laying down for 3-4 hours. This can cause the botox to migrate into unintended areas. Avoiding strenuous exercise 48 hours after injection can also help with the longevity of the treatment. There may be mild discomfort for the first few days following injections.
How Much is Trap Botox in Ottawa?
Trap botox in Ottawa typically starts at $350+. The exact cost will be determined during your initial consultation with one of our Expert Nurse Injectors.
