Achieving Facial Harmony
There is no such thing as a "one-size-fits-all" nose job. A successful rhinoplasty requires a deep understanding of facial proportions and ethnic nuances. Dr. MacArthur’s elite craniofacial background allows him to evaluate your entire facial structure—including your chin, jawline, and forehead projection—to design a nose that looks entirely natural and balanced for your specific face.
Advanced Surgical Techniques
Depending on your aesthetic goals and internal nasal anatomy, Dr. MacArthur utilizes the most advanced, tissue-sparing surgical techniques available in Ottawa. Your custom surgical plan may include:
-
Open Rhinoplasty: Ideal for complex reshaping, revision surgeries, or significant structural changes, providing maximum visibility for precise contouring.
-
Closed Rhinoplasty: All incisions are hidden inside the nostrils, resulting in zero visible scarring and often a faster recovery. Excellent for subtle refinements, such as dorsal hump reduction.
-
Tip Rhinoplasty (Tip-plasty): Focused exclusively on refining a bulbous, boxy, or drooping nasal tip without altering the nasal bridge.
-
Functional Rhinoplasty (Septoplasty): Correcting a deviated septum or enlarged turbinates to restore proper airflow and eliminate breathing obstructions.

Rhinoplasty Before & After Photos
Dr. Ian MacArthur is a Top Rated, Award-Winning Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in Ottawa, Ontario specializing in Rhinoplasty.
Dorsal Hump Reduction & Tip Refinement: This patient wanted to soften her side profile by addressing a prominent dorsal hump and a slightly drooping nasal tip. Dr. MacArthur performed a custom rhinoplasty to smoothly reduce the bridge and subtly rotate the tip upwards, resulting in a highly natural, feminine, and balanced profile.
Female Rhinoplasty in Ottawa: This patient was bothered by a prominent dorsal hump and a drooping nasal tip. Dr. MacArthur performed an open rhinoplasty to smooth the nasal bridge and provide subtle tip rotation, resulting in a softer, highly natural profile.
Revision Rhinoplasty & Chin Augmentation (Facial Balancing) This patient came to us seeking to correct aesthetic concerns from a previous nose surgery performed elsewhere. To achieve total facial harmony, Dr. MacArthur performed a complex revision rhinoplasty combined with a custom chin implant. Strengthening the chin provides better projection, making the newly refined nose look perfectly balanced and natural to her facial structure.
Bridge Smoothing & Subtle Tip Refinement: This patient desired an elegant, natural-looking enhancement to her profile. She felt her nasal bridge was slightly uneven and her tip lacked definition. Dr. MacArthur performed a precision rhinoplasty to meticulously smooth the dorsal line and delicately lift and refine the nasal tip. The outcome is a beautifully contoured nose that seamlessly flatters her natural facial proportions without looking overdone.
Profile Contouring & Nasal Bridge Smoothing This patient came to New Age Medical Aesthetics looking to soften her side profile. Dr. MacArthur expertly contoured the prominent bump on the nasal bridge and gently rotated the plunging nasal tip upward. The final result is a beautifully straight, feminine profile that dramatically enhances her natural facial harmony while maintaining her unique identity.
Nasal Bridge Narrowing & Sidewall Contouring: A beautiful rhinoplasty must look flawless from every angle, not just the side profile. In this three-quarter view, the arrows highlight where the patient's nasal bridge was previously wide and slightly irregular. Dr. MacArthur expertly narrowed the nasal bones and smoothed the lateral sidewalls to restore graceful, symmetrical dorsal aesthetic lines. The result is a refined, elegant contour that seamlessly connects the brow to the nasal tip.
Why is Rhinoplasty one of the most popular Aesthetic procedures?
Someone might be interested in undergoing a rhinoplasty for many reasons. There are many different types of rhinoplasty to consider according to the aesthetic goals you would like to achieve.
Some people are unhappy with how their nose looks from their side profile. They may also have a bump, known as a dorsal hump, on the bridge of their nose. Other patients may feel that their nasal tip is less defined than they would prefer or hangs too low. Sometimes the nose is too wide or narrow, and other times it can be deviated off to the side.
No two noses are the same. Nasal anatomy varies significantly among patients. Therefore, each surgical plan must be custom tailored to achieve optimal results.
One of the other main reasons patients undergo this procedure is to improve their breathing. Some patients are born with a deviated septum. This means, without surgery, the space for air to pass through the nose is reduced.
Other patients may have similar symptoms because of a past injury that contributes to restricting nasal airflow. Combining functional airway surgery with cosmetic work is not uncommon when performing rhinoplasty surgery.
Revision Rhinoplasty
Another reason patients sometimes visit New Age Medical Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery is for revision surgery following a past rhinoplasty. These patients have had surgery elsewhere and may be unhappy with their results for various reasons. Revision surgery can be very complex. The patient and their surgeon must be on the same page about the goals of treatment and what can be accomplished.

Reshaping The Nose Open Rhinoplasty Vs Closed Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty can be divided into two main types, “open” and “closed.”
An open rhinoplasty involves a tiny external scar in the columella. The columella is the skin and cartilage that separates the nostrils. Plastic surgeons often choose to make this incision. It gives them a better view of the cartilage and bone that form the nose's framework.
A closed rhinoplasty uses only hidden incisions within the nostrils, resulting in no visible scar. During your consultation, Dr. MacArthur will advise you on what he thinks is best.
Rhinoplasty recovery typically takes 1 to 2 weeks. Swelling and bruising may be expected as a normal part of the healing process.

What Is The Cost Of Rhinoplasty In Ottawa, Ontario?

Does OHIP or Health Canada Cover the Cost of Rhinoplasty?
OHIP and Canada Health will not cover the cost of a Rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons. If you are getting a nose job to specifically improve nasal structure and function, please talk to your primary physician for a referral to a plastic surgeon.
Who is a Good Candidate For Rhinoplasty?
A good candidate for rhinoplasty is typically an individual who is unhappy with the shape, size, or angle of their nose, and is in good overall health.
How is Rhinoplasty Performed?
Rhinoplasty is performed under anesthesia. The surgeon makes incisions to access the bones and cartilage that support the nose. The bone and cartilage are then reshaped to achieve the desired result.
Recovery After Rhinoplasty
Recovery after rhinoplasty typically involves several stages. Everyone responds to recovery uniquely, depending on the extent of surgery and how their body responds to the healing process. Most people can expect to return to normal activities within 1-2 weeks. Final results will be seen approximately one year after surgery. Here’s a general outline of what you might expect:
Immediate Post-Operative Period (First 24 Hours):
- After surgery, you may feel groggy, sleepy, or slightly euphoric from the anesthesia. Our nursing staff will assist you from when you wake up until your ride arrives to drive you home. We recommend that you have someone assist you at home for the first 24 hours of recovery.
- You may experience bleeding and stuffiness in your nose; this is normal. Dr. MacArthur may place a drip pad directly under your nose to absorb blood and mucus.
- You’ll experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort through recovery. Dr. MacArthur can prescribe pain medication to manage discomfort.
- Rest with your head elevated for at least a week to reduce swelling, minimize fluid buildup, and promote good circulation.
First Week:
- This period involves the most significant recovery. Within 48 hours, swelling and bruising around the eyes and nose will peak. Cold compresses help to reduce swelling.
- You’ll likely wear a nasal splint and may have packing inside your nostrils. It may feel slightly uncomfortable; however, it’s essential to keep the nasal splint and packing in place until removed by Dr. MacArthur.
- Avoid blowing your nose, strenuous activities, and any activities that could risk bumping your nose.
Second Week:
Most bruising subsides, and swelling decreases. Subtle nose swelling persists for a few months, up to a year.
You may feel ready to return to work and resume everyday activities. However, avoiding strenuous exercise is essential, especially any movements that may result in a nose injury.
If you have a nasal splint or external sutures, they’re often removed around this time.
One to Three Months:
As the swelling continues to subside, you’ll start to get a sense of the new shape of your nose.
Protecting your nose from any potential impacts (pets, kids, exercise) is essential, as this can affect your final result.
One Year:
The final shape of your nose will be more evident. Swelling often persists in the tip of the nose for several months, especially in cases of extensive surgery.
General Tips:
Follow Dr. MacArthur’s post-operative care instructions carefully. This includes guidelines on cleaning your nose, what to avoid during recovery, taking medications on time, and attending your follow-up appointments.
Avoid sun exposure as much as possible. Sun exposure can cause skin discoloration, skin irritation, and prolonged swelling. Wear sunscreen daily.
Be patient. It can take up to a year or more to see the final result.
How Can I Reduce Swelling After Rhinoplasty?
Elevation, cold compresses, and avoiding strenuous activities can help reduce swelling.
How Soon Can I Fly After My Rhinoplasty?
The exact timeline for flying after rhinoplasty can vary based on the individual and the specifics of their procedure. However, a general guideline that many surgeons follow is to wait at least a few days after surgery before flying.
The main reason for this is the changes in air pressure during flight, which can affect healing and increase swelling and discomfort. Additionally, there's a risk of nosebleeds after rhinoplasty, and changes in air pressure during flight can exacerbate this risk.
Flying soon after surgery can expose you to a higher risk of catching an infection in an environment like an airplane where you're close to many other people.
During your initial consultation this will be discussed with Dr. Ian MacArthur in detail.
When can I wear glasses after rhinoplasty?
You should avoid wearing glasses directly on the nose for about 4-6 weeks after surgery to avoid altering the shape of your nose while it heals.
Will I have scars after rhinoplasty?
In closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are hidden inside the nose, so there are no visible scars. In open rhinoplasty, a small scar may be visible on the underside of the nose, but it often fades over time.
Will rhinoplasty change my sense of smell?
Temporary changes or loss of smell can occur due to swelling, but this usually resolves as the swelling subsides.
What is ethnic rhinoplasty?
Ethnic rhinoplasty refers to procedures performed on non-Caucasian patients that respect and preserve distinct racial and ethnic features.
What should I expect during the consultation for rhinoplasty?
During the consultation, the surgeon will assess your overall health, discuss your goals and expectations, explain the procedure, risks, and recovery process, and answer any questions you may have.
Can rhinoplasty be combined with other facial surgeries?
Yes, rhinoplasty can be combined with other procedures like chin augmentation, facelift, or eyelid surgery for comprehensive facial enhancement.
When can I resume exercise after rhinoplasty?
If you're not happy with your results, discuss your concerns with your surgeon. Revision rhinoplasty may be an option, but it's typically recommended to wait at least a year for full healing before considering a second surgery.
What if I'm Not Happy With My Rhinoplasty Results?
Most surgeons recommend waiting at least 3-4 weeks before resuming strenuous physical activity.
What are the Non-Surgical Alternatives to Rhinoplasty?
Non-surgical alternatives include the use of dermal fillers to temporarily change the shape of the nose.
Can Rhinoplasty Change the Sound Of My Voice?
It is unlikely that rhinoplasty will change your voice unless the procedure involves significant alterations to your nasal passages.
Will My Nose Be Broken During Surgery?
In rhinoplasty, the term ‘breaking the nose’ is often used to describe the surgical procedure called ‘osteotomy.’ While this term may sound alarming, it’s essential to understand that it’s not as dramatic or violent as it may initially sound.
During an osteotomy, Dr. Ian MacArthur makes precise, controlled cuts in the nasal bone to realign it and achieve the desired shape. This process might be necessary if a patient has a broad nasal bridge, a hump on the bridge, or if the nose appears crooked. It’s also standard practice for secondary rhinoplasties, where previous surgeries have left the nose with an asymmetrical or undesirable shape.
Here are a few common reasons that may necessitate an osteotomy:
Nasal Hump: If a patient wishes to remove a hump or bump on their nasal bridge, the surgeon will have to break and reshape the bone to ensure a smooth, natural slope.
Nasal Width: If a patient has a wide nasal bridge, the surgeon may perform an osteotomy to narrow it and provide a more balanced appearance.
Crooked Nose: For a patient with a crooked nose due to an accident or natural growth, an osteotomy can correct the asymmetry.
Revision Rhinoplasty: In cases where a previous rhinoplasty has resulted in a nasal deformity or dissatisfaction, an osteotomy can be done to make the necessary corrections.
What if I'm Not Happy With My Rhinoplasty Results?
If you're not happy with your results, discuss your concerns with your surgeon. Revision rhinoplasty may be an option, but it's typically recommended to wait at least a year for full healing before considering a second surgery.
